Launch day: Home Route Health is officially open

Home Route Health is officially open.

On Saturday, October 17, we sponsored Forrest General Cancer Center's fifth annual Fuel to Fight Cancer 5 Miler, 5K and 2 Mile Walk. Proceeds go to the Fuel to Fight Fund, which helps cancer patients get to and from their appointments, and more than 800 people registered to run and walk for it. It was the right place for us to start, and the first truly cold morning since last winter. We were not prepared for it, and we showed up in shorts and T-shirts.

How the morning went

Our team ran the 5K in Home Route Health shirts, and we set up a table to meet people, hand out cards and answer questions. For the record, I am a bodybuilder at heart, and I mostly train for hypertrophy rather than endurance. Needless to say, the run was a shock to my body, and my legs are still sore two days later.

I did not do any of this alone. My friend Anie had the table set up at six in the morning, before the sun was up. My friend Krystal drove up from the coast to work the table with me, and she carried the conversations. I am introverted by nature, and watching her talk to strangers like old friends taught me more than I expected. Two more friends ran the race in HRH shirts and passed out business cards along the way. And my wife spent the morning keeping our kids contained, wrapped up in a blanket in the wagon we brought, which was its own kind of endurance event.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by the table, and to the Forrest General Healthcare Foundation for a well-run morning for a great cause.
